Abstract

In a process for treating fabrics for bleaching, dyeing, treatment after printing or for final or advanced finishing processes in which the treated fabric is exposed to a heat treatment, the fabric after impregnation with the treatment medium and its removal from the impregnation bath is adjusted to a moisture content, which in the case of a fabric consisting of natural fibres is relative to the dry weight of the fabric not more than 15% and not less than 10% of the moisture content of the saturated fabric and in the case of a fabric consisting of man-made fibres is at least 10% and not more than 30% and maintained at this moisture content until entry to the heat treatment stage and is then subjected to a heat treatment in a medium consisting of steam or a steam/air mixture under higher than atmospheric pressure, the vapour pressure or partial pressure of which does not exceed 2.5 atmospheres absolute. The moisture content of the fabric may be adjusted by high-pressure squeezing or wringing or by drying with continuous measurement of the moisture content by automatic control. Alternatively the fabric may be fully dried and then brought to the required moisture content by controlled damping or spraying. The drying may be preceded by a diffusion or conditioning stage and the fabric may be stretched or tentered before the heating step. The impregnation may be carried out by first impregnating the fabric with a neutral treatment solution, carrying out a high-effect squeezing or intermediate drying and then applying a highly-concentrated actual treatment medium additively.
