Abstract

A process for the permanent setting of keratin-containing fabrics comprises steaming the fabric, in the form in which it is to be set, in the presence of an agent which is volatile in steam and which is capable of aiding the breakdown of the disulphide bonds of the keratin-containing material, followed by further steaming in the presence of the volatile agent, during which further steaming the volatile agent diminishes in concentration or disappears because of dilution or evaporation by the steam. The agent used may be ammonia, cyclohexylamine, trimethylamine, ethylamine or ethylene diamine or carbonates of these bases, hydrazine, hydrazine hydrate, ammonium bisulphite or sulphurous acid. Sodium bisulphite may also be used, but in this modification of the invention the residual base must be removed by washing. The treatment may be accomplished in one of the three following ways:-(i) the fabric is placed on a plane sheet of pleating paper and dusted with a powdered volatile base such as ammonium carbonate; it is then covered with a further sheet of pleating paper, pleated in the desired manner, and steamed until all volatile material has escaped; (ii) the fabric is pleated as before, the volatile base being introduced into the steam during the early stages of steaming; (iii) the fabric is treated with a solution of sulphur dioxide or of a bisulphite after which it is rinsed, pleated and steamed as before. If desired, the steaming process may be carried out on the roller of a blowing machine. The pleats are said to be substantially unaffected by wetting or by dry-cleaning. Examples and experimental results are given.
