Abstract
<PICT:0620584/IV (c)/1> Textile and like materials are subjected to heat treatment by passing them in continuous length in a substantially wholly vertical path through a bath of molten metal having a melting point between substantially 60 DEG and 100 DEG C., at a temperature not substantially higher than 120 DEG C. Wood's alloy, Rose's alloy or an alloy containing tin, lead, bismuth and cadmium melting at about 70 DEG C. is suitable. The material may be treated with a liquid or semi-liquid before passing it through the bath of molten metal, e.g. by padding or printing. In a modification, the textile or like material is passed firstly through a treating liquor floating on the surface of a molten metal having a melting point not substantially higher than 100 DEG C., and then through the molten metal. The process is particularly applicable to the dyeing of textile materials with vat dyes and sulphur dyes, including mixtures of different vat dyes or sulphur dyes which normally require different proportions of alkali and reducing agents. The advantages of the process are that the pressure applied to the material is evenly distributed and does not deface the cloth; the escape of liquor from the cloth is prevented; the cloth and liquor attain the desired temperature almost immediately; air is excluded; the amount of liquor applied is proportional to the amount of cloth at any part of a non-uniform fabric; heat treatment is rapid; and in vat dyeing a low ratio of dye liquor and therefore alkali to fabric is used. In Fig. 2, the cloth 4a, 4b enters the dye liquor 21 in the dye box 22 above the level 20 of the molten metal contained in the vessel formed by the side plates 13, 14 and the central portion 17. Steam pipes 18 are provided to heat the metal bath. According to the Provisional Specifications the bath may comprise any liquid or molten material which is not absorbed by, and does not react chemically with, the fabric or any treating liquid thereon, for example, mercury, oleoginous material, synthetic resinous or plastic materials. The treatment may also take place at atmospheric temperature.ALSO:An alloy melting at about 70 DEG C. consists of an eutectic mixture consisting of tin 13.3 per cent, lead 26.7 per cent, bismuth 50 per cent and cadmium 10 per cent.
