Abstract
The shrinkage of textile materials during treatment thereof at elevated temperatures is obviated or minimized by maintaining the fabric in a taut condition on a rotatable heated drum having at least two sets of pins positioned around its curved surface and engaging the textile material at or near the edges; means such as wire brushes or grooved rollers, are provided for causing the textile material to be pierced by the pins. Artificial textile materials e.g. nylon and polyethylene terephthalate may be treated, as may textile materials which have been padded with a solution or suspension of a colouring matter, or to which a colouring matter has been applied locally, e.g., as thickened printing paste. In an example, a plain weave cloth made from polyethylene terephthalate yarn is padded through a suspension containing 30 per cent Durindone Printing Red BS (Colour Index No. 1207), 2.5 per cent ammonium polymethacrylate, and 0.3 per cent of sulphonated oleic acid, and passed through a padding mangle set to leave 20 per cent of dye liquor in the cloth. It is then dried and passed round a spreader bar on to a drum, as described above, the temperature of which is maintained between 235 DEG C. and 245 DEG C. The rate of travel is such that the fabric remains in contact with the drum for between 7 and 15 seconds.
