Abstract

542,247. Refining cellulose materials ; treating textiles with liquids. SHOOTER. W. A., and MORROW, H. J., (trading as WOODBURN BLEACHING & DYEING CO.). July 11, 1940, No. 11693. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Vegetable fibres in the form of plant material, raw fibre, or yarn, particularly fibres of the bast group, are purified by steeping them in a warm aqueous bath or equivalent to assist subsequent wetting out and penetration of treating liquid, and then immersing them in a warm alkaline solution containing a detergent. They are then washed and immersed in a warm size or batching preparation. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of jute fibres. In an example, jute taken from bales is placed evenly in an open tank containing sufficient cold water to cover completely all the jute. The water is kept in motion and heated gradually to 90‹ F. and maintained at this temperature. The water is drained off and the jute is then treated with a solution containing 1-3 per cent. of sodium carbonate and about 0.5 per cent. of a detergent, e.g. " Tetralene " or " Unipon " (Registered Trade Marks), at a temperature of not more than 110‹ F. " Unipon " is a mixture of trichlorethylene and soluble oil. After this treatment the jute is removed and washed. It is then treated with a warm solution of a batching preparation comprising bleached palm oil and French chalk emulsified in water with ammonia. This solution may contain a little carbon tetrachloride rendered soluble by the addition of soluble oil and ammonia.
