Abstract
Fabrics containing yarns having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose are shrunk by means of an aqueous solution of a lower aliphatic alcohol, preferably a 20--80 per cent solution of methyl or ethyl alcohol used for 4--8 mins. at normal temperature or for \ba1/2\be--3 secs. near its boiling point. The alcohol solution may be applied to the fabric by immersion or by spraying, and excess solution removed by passing the fabric through nip rollers covered with absorbent material such as linen or cotton. The treatment may be used for producing antishrink fabrics, or for producing fabrics of a closer construction than is p possible by weaving. Fabrics treated according to the invention also exhibit a reduced tendency of the weft to slip on the warp. In an example, a taffeta fabric consisting wholly of yarns containing cellulose acetate is immersed for 1 sec. in a bath at 88 DEG C. containing 4 parts of water and 1 part of ethyl alcohol, squeezed and dried; a shrinkage of 17 per cent in the warp direction and 11 per cent in the weft direction results, giving a tightly woven taffeta. Specification 408,654 is referred to.
