Abstract

Textiles consisting of or containing animal hairs, e.g. wool, mohair, angora, shoddy, alone or mixed or with silk, rayon, cotton, are oiled, subjected to one or more textile processes, and scoured, the oil consisting of an ester or mixture of esters as defined with or without a diluent, the viscosity being between 200 and 650 seconds Redwood at 60 DEG C. The esters are such fully esterified liquid synthetic esters of the following groups as have specified properties: (1) ester formed from a monohydric alcohol and an unsaturated acid, polymerized and/or oxidized; (2) ester formed from a monohydric alcohol, and a polymerized and/or oxidized unsaturated fatty acid, the acid may be polymerized and/or oxidized as such or as an ester which is then hydrolyzed; (3) ester formed from a di- or a tri-glycol and an acid as in (2); (4) ester formed from a di- or a tri-glycol and a saturated or an unsaturated fatty acid; in all cases the acids contain 8 or more carbon atoms. A "polymerized and/or oxidized" ester or acid is one which has been heated with or without access of air with polymerization, oxidation, or both, has been effected. The specified properties are: the ester (1) must not oxidize much more easily than olive oil (as used for textile purposes); (2) is substantially insoluble in water; (3) does not disperse in water by simple agitation; (4) can be removed by scouring in soap solution with or without alkali. The esters may be used alone, or in aqueous emulsion, or in admixture with a diluent which may be of higher or lower viscosity, e.g. petroleum jelly, polymerized rape oil, a thin mineral oil, or a thin ester. The example given is an oxidized and slightly polymerized methyl cyclohexanol oleate, iodine value 51; this may be emulsified with soap solution, or with Twitchell base, to form a "wool cream" requiring dilution before use. Components specified for the different groups of esters are: alcohols-for groups 1 and 2, hexyl, lauryl, cetyl, cholesterol, methyl cyclohexanol, ethyl; for groups 3 and 4, di- or triethylene and propylene glycols; acids-for groups 1, 2 and 3, mono- and di-ethenoid fatty acids, and simple substitutive producer; for group 4, mono-ethenoid and saturated fatty acids, e.g. oleic, stearic, and oxidized or hydrogenated di-ethenoid fatty acids, and simple substitution products, e.g. dihydroxy-stearic acid.
