Abstract
Textile materials are softened by treatment with an aqueous dispersion of a compound containing at least one aliphatic chain of at least 12 carbon atoms, the dispersion containing a dispersing agent comprising a water-soluble salt of a monoester of an aliphatic, aromatic, or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid with an N-hydroxyalkylamide of a higher fatty acid and, if desired, in addition, a sulphonation product dispersing agent containing an aliphatic residue of at least 12 carbon atoms. Specified textile materials are wool, silk, cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose fibres, cellulose acetate fibres and polyamide fibres. The disperse phase may comprise esters and amides of the higher fatty acids, e.g. fatty oils, vegetable and animal fats, and N-hydroxyalkylamides such as stearic acid ethanolamide and oleic acid ethanolamide, and also mineral oils. The monoester dispersing agents may be prepared, for example, as described in Specifications 615,665 and 621,324. Specified sulphonation product dispersing agents are sulphonic acids of benzimidazoles having a side chain of at least 8 carbon atoms which benzimidazoles may be aralkylated, e.g. the sodium salt of N-benzyl-m -heptadecyl-benzimidazole disulphonic acid; carboxylic acid esters of 4-sulphophthalic acid; sulphuric acid esters of higher fatty alcohols; acylated oxyalkyl or aminoalkyl sulphonic acids and highly sulphonated oils. The materials are impregnated with the dispersion at room or higher temperatures, then squeezed or centrifuged and finally dried.ALSO:Fibrous materials are softened by treatment with an aqueous dispersion of a compound containing at least one aliphatic chain of at least 12 carbon atoms, the dispersion containing a dispersing agent comprising a water-soluble salt of a monoester of an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid with an N-hydroxyalkylamide of a higher fatty acid and, if desired, in addition, a sulphonation product dispersing agent containing an aliphatic residue of at least 12 carbon atoms. Specified fibrous materials are wool, silk, cotton, linen, regenerated cellulose fibres, cellulose acetate fibres, polyamide fibres, paper and leather. The disperse phase may comprise esters and amides of the higher fatty acids, e.g. fatty oils, vegetable and animal fats, and N-hydroxyalkylamides such as stearic acid ethanolamide and oleic acid ethanolamide, and also mineral oils. The monoester dispersing agents may be prepared, for example, as described in Specifications 615,665 and 621,324, [both in Group IV (c)].
