Abstract

Emulsifying and dispersing agents are prepared by the simultaneous sulphonation and condensation of unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids containing more than eight carbon atoms or derivatives thereof, such as esters, anhydrides, or polymerides, with sulphonated aromatic carboxylic acids or their anhydrides. The products may be used for dispersing or emulsifying dyestuffs, hydrocarbons and their substitution derivatives, e.g. higher alcohols. In examples (1) phthalic anhydride-b -sulphonic acid is dissolved in sulphuric acid and treated with castor oil; (2) a solution of phthalic acid-b -sulphonic acid, obtained by treating phthalic anhydride with oleum, is directly treated with castor oil. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the simultaneous sulphonation and condensation of sulphonated aromatic carboxylic acids or their anhydrides with any higher aliphatic unsaturated fatty acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Assistants for the textile and leather industries are prepared by the simultaneous sulphonation and condensation of unsaturated hydroxy fatty acids containing more than eight carbon atoms or derivatives thereof, such as esters, anhydrides or polymerides, with sulphonated aromatic carboxylic acids or their anhydrides. The products, which are wetting, cleaning, dispersing and emulsifying agents may be used in dyeing and mercerizing and for dispersing dyestuffs, hydrocarbons and their substitution derivatives, e.g. higher alcohols, and for making finishes and dressings containing magnesium sulphate. In examples, (1) phthalic anhydride-b -sulphonic acid, obtainable by heating the free acid in a vacuum, is dissolved in sulphuric acid and treated with castor oil: (2) a solution of phthalic acid-b -sulphonic acid, obtained by treating phthalic anhydride with oleum, is directly treated with castor oil. Further examples relate to wetting cotton yarn with an aqueous solution containing soap and a product prepared according to example (2) and to dyeing silk skeins and viscose silk in baths containing besides Marseilles soap, Glauber's salt and the product prepared according to example (2), Fast acid violet R in the case of the silk skeins, and Direct sky blue in the case of the viscose. Lime present in the baths is not precipitated as insoluble soap. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the simultaneous sulphonation and condensation of sulphonated aromatic carboxylic acids or their anhydrides with any higher aliphatic unsaturated fatty acid or derivative thereof, oleic acid, olive oil, and cotton-seed oil being mentioned. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
