Abstract

Sulphonated oleic acids useful as cleansing and emulsifying agents are prepared by cooling commercial oleic acids to between -5 and +10 DEG C., so as to remove a large proportion of the solid constituents such as stearin, and sulphonating the purified acids at a temperature between -5 and +10 DEG C. in the absence of a solvent. The products or their neutral or acid salts may also be used as constituents of spinning oils. Experimental results are given illustrating the relative stability to oxygen of spinning oils containing sulphonated oleic acids, prepared as described above, and free from or containing iron. Reference is made also to the preparation of washing powders by mixing a neutralized sulphonated oleic acid, prepared as described above, with other products such as solid soda. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of aliphatic or hydroaromatic esters or other derivatives of sulphonated oleic acids, prepared as described above, for the purposes stated above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Sulphonated oleic acids useful as wetting, cleansing, and emulsifying agents are prepared by cooling commercial oleic acids to between -5 and +10 DEG C. so as to remove a large proportion of the solid constituents such as stearin, and sulphonating the purified acids at a temperature between -5 and +10 DEG C. in the absence of a solvent. An example is given in which sulphuric acid is used as the sulphonating agent, but chlorsulphonic acid may also be used. The products or their neutral or acid salts may be used in dyeing, carbonizing, bucking, fulling, sizing and dressing processes, and also as scrooping agents for artificial silk and as constituents of spinning oils and compositions for fire-extinguishing, disinfecting, and combating insects. In examples of the use of the products, sulphonated oleic acid prepared as described above is (1) added to soap solution used for fulling wool, (2) added to dilute sulphuric acid used as a fulling bath in the manufacture of felt, (3) added to a dye bath of unspecified composition, and (4) added to a dilute sulphuric acid carbonizing bath. Experimental results are given also illustrating the relative stability to oxygen of spinning oils containing sulphonated oleic acid, prepared as described above, and free from or containing iron. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
