Abstract

Cleansing-compositions.--Products which are stated to be emulsifying, cleansing and dust binding agents are obtained by treating sulphonated alcohols containing at least six carbon atoms with organic nitrogenous bases. Preferably heterocyclic nitrogenous bases are used but aliphatic or mixed aliphatic-aromatic bases, e.g., methylamine, ethylamine or methylaniline may be used. For the sulphonation of the alcohols, sulphuric acid, oleum or chlorsulphonic acid may be used, lower fatty acids or their anhydrides or chlorides being added if desired. In examples (1) lauryl alcohol is sulphonated with chlorsulphonic acid and then treated with pyridine: (2) stearin alcohol is similarly sulphonated and then stirred with technical pyridine bases.ALSO:Wetting, penetrating, foaming and dispersing agents are obtained by treating sulphonated alcohols containing at least six carbon atoms with organic nitrogenous bases. Preferably heterocyclic nitrogenous bases are used but aliphatic or mixed aliphatic-aromatic bases, e.g. methylamine, ethylamine or methylaniline may be used. For the sulphonation of the alcohols, sulphuric acid, oleum or chlorsulphonic acid may be used, lower fatty acids or their anhydrides or chlorides being added if desired. In examples: (1) lauryl alcohol is sulphonated with chlorsulphonic acid and then treated with pyridine; (2) stearin alcohol is similarly sulphonated and then stirred with technical pyridine bases. The products may be used in the textile, leather, metal-working and pharmaceutical industries, and in the preparation of dust binding agents and vermicides. They improve the feel of textiles and may thus be used for finishing and softening. Their use as cleansing and emulsifying agents is also mentioned.
