Abstract

Materials useful as auxiliary agents in the textile and other industries are prepared by acylating the products obtained by reacting glycide with water-insoluble hydroxy compounds containing more than eight carbon atoms directly connected together. As hydroxy compounds, dodecyl alcohol, octadecyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol and castor oil are specified; their reaction with glycide is effected as described in Specification 420,903. For the acylation, organic and inorganic acids and their anhydrides and chlorides are mentioned, e.g. chlorsulphonic acid, oleic acid chloride and coconut oil fatty acid chloride. The hydroxy compounds may also be reacted with organic sulphonic acids containing reactive groups, e.g. chlorethane sulphonic acid, benzyl chloride sulphonic acid and ethylene sulphonic acid. The products are useful as emulsifying, cleansing, wetting, dispersing, impregnating and softening agents in the textile, leather, caoutchouc, lacquer and paper industries, as protective colloids in the dye industry, and in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for preparing creams and salves. An example is given of the treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature below 60 DEG C. of the reaction product of glycide with octadecyl alcohol; the neutralized product is useful as a washing, wetting or dispersing agent.ALSO:Materials prepared by acylating the products obtained by reacting glycide with water-insoluble hydroxy compounds containing more than eight carbon atoms directly connected together and stated to be useful as emulsifying and dispersing agents in the textile, leather, caoutchouc, lacquer and paper industries, and as protective colloids in the dye industry.
