Abstract
Emulsifying agents are obtained by sulphonating esters of saturated fatty acids with alcohols containing at least ten carbon atoms, in the presence of inert organic solvents, whereby the esters are at least partly saponified, and separating the acid reaction product from the inert solvent which contains the liberated fatty acids and any unattacked initial material. In examples, spermaceti, beeswax and wool fat are treated with chlorsulphonic acid, sulphuric acid and oleum in the presence of carbon tetrachloride or a mixture of the latter with ethyl ether. p The products may be used in conjunction with solvents, soaps, glue gelatine, Turkey red oils and aliphatic and aromatic sulphonic acids.ALSO:Wetting, cleansing, and dispersing agents are obtained by sulphonating esters of saturated fatty acids with alcohols containing at least 10 carbon atoms in the presence of inert organic solvents, whereby the esters are at least partly saponified, and separating the acid reaction product from the inert solvent which contains the liberated fatty acids and any unattacked initial material. The products may be employed in the textile and leather industries e.g. in softening, dyeing, carbonizing, and finishing, and also in washing suint wool and in resist dyeing of mixed fabrics containing wool. In examples, spermaceti, beeswax, and wool-fat are treated with chlorsulphonic acid, sulphuric acid, and with oleum, in the presence of carbontetrachloride or a mixture of the latter with ethyl ether. The acid reaction product is in each case separated from the solvent layer, neutralized and evaporated. It is a foaming, wetting, cleansing and dispersing agent and may be used in conjunction with solvents, soaps, glue, gelatine, Turkey-red oils, and aliphatic and aromatic sulphonic acids.
