Abstract

As softening agents for textile goods containing artificial silk, use is made of mixtures of water-insoluble saturated fatty acid amides or N-substitution products thereof (other than N-hydroxyalkyl substitution products) with sulphonic acids or sulphuric esters derived from hydroxylated paraffin derivatives containing from 12 to about 30 carbon atoms and about one hydroxyl group. The softening agents may be prepared by mixing the components directly, an excess of the sulphonic acid or sulphuric ester component being preferably used. Alternatively, the fatty acid amide or substituted amide may be added to the hydroxylated paraffin derivative prior to the sulphonation of the latter, whereafter sulphonation is effected with a sufficiently restricted proportion of sulphonating agent and/or at a sufficiently low temperature to avoid sulphonation of the amide. In the examples, (1) a sulphonated product is prepared by heating a trichlorinated paraffin with aqueous caustic soda under pressure, as described in Specification 343,948, and treating the product with chlorsulphonic acid, as described in Specification 344,829; an aqueous paste of this sulphonated product is mixed with palmitic amide, and the mixtue is warmed; instead of palmitic amide its N-monoethyl, N-cyclohexyl, and N-benzyl derivatives may be used; (2) the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of lauryl alcohol is mixed with stearic amide and water, and the mixture is warmed; (3) a mixture of lauryl alcohol and palmitic amide is sulphonated in trichlorethylene to produce a mixture of unsulphonated palmitic amide with the sulphuric ester of lauryl alcohol; instead of lauryl alcohol a mixture of cetyl and oleyl alcohols may be used. The softening agents may be added to the finishing bath or the dye bath. Specification 328,675, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], also is referred to.
