Abstract

Hydroxy fatty acids containing at least sixteen carbon atoms in the molecule and derivatives thereof are sulphonated with at least an equal weight of sulphuric acid containing at least 10 per cent of water, at a temperature which is not sufficiently high to remove the sulpho group from the products. The latter are wetting and emulsifying agents. Fat solvents, such as hydrogenated phenols or naphthols, hydrocarbons, and high molecular alcohols may, for example, be emulsified therewith. In examples: (1) castor oil is sulphonated with solutions of sulphuric acid of 85 and 90 per cent strength at temperatures of 10-20 DEG and 25-30 DEG C.; after sulphonation, the products are washed with solutions of salt or sodium sulphate, and neutralized; (2) viscose artificial silk yarn is dyed with Direct sky blue, the dyeing bath being made up with the product of example (1) and hard water. The artificial silk is simultaneously softened. Sodium acetate or a homologue thereof may be mixed with the products to act as a buffer salt.ALSO:Emulsifying-agents are obtained by sulphonating hydroxy fatty acids containing at least sixteen carbon atoms in the molecule and derivatives thereof with at least an equal weight of sulphuric acid containing at least 10 per cent of water, at a temperature which is not sufficiently high to remove the sulpho group from the products. Fat solvents, such as hydrogenated phenols or naphthols, hydrocarbons and high molecular alcohols may, for example, be emulsified therewith. In examples castor oil is sulphonated with solutions of sulphuric acid of 85 and 90 per cent strength at temperatures of 10-20 DEG and 25-30 DEG C.; after sulphonation, the products are washed with solutions of salt or sodium sulphate, and neutralized. Sodium acetate or a homologue thereof may be mixed with the products to act as a buffer salt.
