Abstract

A composition suitable for use as a spinning oil in the spinning of natural and synthetic fibres comprises (1) a sulphated addition product of an alkylene oxide containing not more than 4 carbon atoms per molecule and a hydrophobic substance, which may be either an acyclic compound containing 8-22 carbon atoms per molecule or an isocyclic compound provided with a carbon side chain, containing a polar group having at least one active hydrogenation, and (2) a non-sulphated alkylene oxide adduct, e.g. alkyl phenol alkylene oxide adducts and esters of resin acids such as abietic acid with polyalkylene glycols, a fatty alcohol sulphate, a sulphated vegetable oil or oleic acid. The sulphated alkylene oxide adducts may be prepared by sulphating with sulphamic acid, chlorosulphonic acid or gaseous SO3 the addition product obtained by reacting 2-10 mols. of the alkylene oxide with 1 mol. of an acyclic compound having 8-22 carbon atoms per molecule or an alkyl aryl compound having 8-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain and containing an OH, NH2, CONH4 or COOH group. The composition may be applied to the fibres as an aqueous dispersion or solution or sprayed on to them in the non-diluted state.ALSO:Natural and synthetic textile fibres, e.g. wool, viscose rayon, polyamide and polyacrylonitrile fibres, are treated before and or during being spun into a yarn with a sulphated addition product of an alkylene oxide containing not more than 4 carbon atoms per molecule and a hydrophobic substance, which may be either an acyclic compound containing 8-22 carbon atoms per molecule or an isocyclic compound provided with a carbon side-chain containing a polar group having at least one active hydrogen atom to improve their handle and electrostatic properties. The compounds used may be prepared by sulphating with sulphonic acid, chlorosulphonic acid or gaseous SO3 the addition product obtained by reacting 2-10 mols of the alkylene oxide with 1 mol of an acyclic compound having 8-22 carbon atoms in the molecule or an alkylaryl compound having 8-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain and containing an OH, NH2, CONH2 or COOH group. Suitable hydrophobic substances which may be used in preparing the addition products are pelargonic, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, behenic, arachic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic and abietic acids, octyl, nonyl, lauryl, tridecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, octadecyl, eicosyl, oleyl and abietyl alcohols, cetyl, decyl, p tetradecyl, octadecyl, octadecenyl and octadecadienyl amides and amines and octyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl and dodecyl phenols. The sulphated alkylene oxide adducts may be used in admixture with non-sulphated alkylene oxide adducts, e.g. alkyl phenol alkylene oxide adducts and esters of resin acids such as abietic acid with polyalkylene glycols, fatty alcohol sulphates, sulphated vegetable oils and oleic acid. The sulphated alkylene oxide adducts may be applied to the fibres in the form of an aqueous dispersion or solution or sprayed on to them in the non-diluted state.
