Abstract

Fibres, preparatory to being spun, are oiled and dressed by treating with the condensation products, i.e. esters, amides, or ester-amides, of alkylol amines with organic carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids or sulphonated carboxylic acids of high molecular weight, or with aqueous emulsions of the condensation products or their salts. Examples of suitable alkylol amines are mono-, di and tri-ethanolamine, propanolamine, hydroxyethylaniline and cyclohexyl diethanolamine; examples of suitable acids are the high molecular weight acids of fats, hydroxy fatty acids, derivatives of fatty acids containing amino or halogen groups, aromatic carboxylic acids, their sulphonation products, sulphonic acids prepared from brown coal tar oils, and aromatic sulphonic acids containing side chains. The said condensation products form water-soluble salts with acids, so that they may be washed out with acid baths. In an example 100 parts (by weight) of loose wool are sprayed with 3 parts of a condensation product from mono-hydroxyethyl amine and oleic acid. On treating with a bath containing formic acid, the wool is simultaneously washed and softened.
