Abstract
The process of the parent Specification (wherein viscose rayon is made by spinning viscose containing 0,1 to 1,0% by weight of polymers, co-polymers or block polymers of an epoxyalkane or a substitution product thereof into a coagulating bath containing at least 2% by weight of zinc sulphate and sulphuric acid in a proportion not exceeding 1,3 times the alkali content of the viscose) is modified in that the viscose also contains (a) one or more nitrogencontaining polyoxy-alkylene compounds of the formula: <FORM:0857170/IV(a)/1> (wherein R is an aliphatic radical having at least 8 carbon atoms, n is 2, 3 or 4, x + y is at least 2 and neither x nor y is zero) or the quaternary ammonium compounds thereof, the proportion of the polyoxyalkylene compounds or their derivatives being 15 to 40% of the total proportion of epoxyalkane polymer and the polyoxyalkylene compound or its derivative, and (b) acrylonitrile, ethylene oxide or formaldehyde, the addition of acrylonitrile &c. being made immediately before spinning the viscose and as near as possible to the spinner. R preferably contains 8 to 24 carbon atoms, n is preferably 2 and x + y is preferably 5 to 25. The polyoxy alkylene compounds may be prepared by reacting ethylene oxide with amines derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil, soya oil or tallow. The quaternary ammonium compounds may be prepared by reacting the nitrogen-containing polyoxyalkylene compounds with methyl or ethyl chloride. The epoxyalkane polymer may be polyethylene oxide. The sulphuric acid content of the spinning baths is preferably below 7% by weight and the zinc sulphate content of the baths may be up to 10% by weight or more. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 794,780.
