Abstract
Artificial threads, bands, films and like products are produced by spinning viscose containing 1%-6% by weight, calculated on the cellulose, of at least one cation-active compound of the formula: <FORM:0871334/IV (a)/1> in which R1 represents an alkyl, aryl or alicyclic radical preferably containing at least 6 C-atoms, R2 represents an alkyl radical having 1-3 C-atoms, n is 2-5, x and y are each whole numbers, the sum of x+y preferably being 2-50, and Z represents an anion having substantially no surface activity, e.g. hydroxide, halide, acid sulphate or acetate, into a bath containing a maximum of 7% by weight of sulphuric acid and at least 2% by weight of zinc sulphate, and drawing the spun products. The source of cellulose for the viscose may be wood pulp or cotton linters or mixtures thereof and the viscose preferably contains 5%-8% of cellulose and 4%-8% of alkali and is preferably xanthated with 25%-50% of CS2. The cation-active compounds may be added to the viscose at any stage of its preparation, e.g. during the xanthate dissolving step. The deposition of zinc sulphide in the spinning bath may be prevented by adding to the bath 0,001%-0,5% by weight of a cation-active compound of the same general formula as that added to the viscose, the value for the sum of x+y of the compound added to the bath preferably being less than that of the compound present in the viscose and the amount of the compound added to the bath being preferably 0,02%-0,2% by weight. The spinning bath, which is preferably maintained at a temperature of 30 DEG -75 DEG C., may also contain sodium sulphate or magnesium sulphate. The spun products may be drawn in the spinning bath or immediately after they leave the spinning bath, preferably in a second bath containing dilute acid at 50 DEG -100 DEG C.
