Abstract

Regenerated cellulose filaments are made by extruding into an acid spinbath viscose with which is incorporated a soluble cation-active compound having the formula RN. (Cn H2nO)x H. (Cn H2nO)y H, in which R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain containing at least 8 carbon atoms, n is 2, 3 or 4 and the sum of x and y is at least 5, neither x nor y being zero. R may contain 8-24 carbon atoms, preferably 12-14 carbon atoms, while n may be 2 and x + y about 14. Suitable cationactive tertiary amines may be prepared by condensing one mole of primary amines prepared from coconut oil or soya bean oil with 15 moles of ethylene oxide. In examples such condensates are added to viscose in the proportions of 0.12 per cent. and 0.24 per cent. based on the weight of cellulose and spun in the normal manner at maturities of 9.8 DEG and 11 to 11.5 DEG Hottenroth with production of clear finished rayon. The addition of the cation-active compounds to the viscose inhibits milkiness of the filaments and reduces spinneret incrustation, even when the spinbath contains no cation-active material.
