Abstract

1492052 Textile lubricants PVO INTERNATIONAL Inc 28 Oct 1974 22449/77 Divided out of 1492051 Heading C5F [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Synthetic linear organic polymer filaments and fibres are treated with or incorporate a hydroxypivalyl hydroxy pivalate diester having the general formula in which R 1 and R 2 each represent an alkanoic or alkenoic monocarboxylic acid having from 2 to 24 carbon atoms. The coefficient of friction between the filaments and metal is reduced whilst a slight degree of filament-filament cohesion, so called "balanced cohesion" is produced and thus facilitates the handling of multifilament yarn. The diester is stable at high temperatures. The diester may be applied as an aqueous emulsion as described in parent Specification 1,492,051 as a neat liquid or in solution in an organic solvent. Filaments may be treated in a continuous process, staple fibres are treated in a batch process. The diester may be added to a polymer melt before it is spun into filaments. The diester may be formed from 2 moles of an acid selected from oleic, stearic, palmitic, lauric, nonanoic, iso-nonanoic, heptanoic or caparic acid or the other acids listed in Example VII or it may be formed from mixed acids, e.g. stearic/ iso-nonanoic or palmitic/lauric acids.
