Abstract

A composition of matter suitable for the simultaneous sizing and oiling of textile materials comprises an aqueous solution or dispersion of a hydroxylated polyvinyl resin in which is emulsified a mineral oil composition comprising a mixture of a mineral lubricating oil, a soap, and a partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a fatty acid containing more than 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, the partial ester being present to the extent of not more than 30 per cent by weight based on the quantity of mineral oil. The hydroxylated polyvinyl resin is preferably partially saponified polyvinyl acetate; other resins which can be used being the partial esters of polyvinyl alcohol such as the partial acetates, propionates, glycollic acid esters, formates and lactates, the partial ethers of polyvinyl alcohols such as the glycol and glycollic acid ethers, and the partial acetals and ketals of polyvinyl alcohol. The soap may be sodium or potassium oleate, stearate or naphthasulphonate, and the partial ester may be glycerol mono- or di-oleate, the glycerol mono-ester of the fatty acids of arachis oil, sorbitan mono-stearate or sorbitan mono-oleate. The composition may include an inorganic compound suitable for modifying the water-sensitivity of the resin, such as boric acid or barium chloride, or an antioxidant such as 2,4-dimethyl-6-tertiary-butyl-phenol and 2,6-ditertiary-butyl-4-methylphenol. A weak acid, particularly acetic acid, may be added to the composition to decrease the pH to between 4.0 and 6.5.
