Abstract

An anti-corrosive fuel composition comprises a marine Diesel petroleum hydrocarbon fuel falling within the boiling range of approximately 350-750 DEG F. and a relatively small amount, preferably 0.005-0.5 per cent. by weight based on the hydrocarbon fuel, of a polyethylene ether, or epoxy, derivative of a carboxylic acid ester of a polyhydric alcohol. The epoxy-type additives are carboxylic acid esters of partially dehydrated, and preferably aliphatic, polyhydric alcohols such as the hexitols. The carboxylic acids may be fatty acids, naphthenic acids or resin acids or mixtures thereof, and suitable acids are specified. The preferred polyethylene ether type of additives have the formula <FORM:0711364/III/1> in which x and y are integers, preferably from 1 to 10 and from 1 to 5 respectively, X is a residue of a polyhydric alcohol X(OH)y + 1, and R is a hydrocarbon group containing from 11 to 21 carbon atoms. Polyethylene ether derivatives of sorbitan mono-oleate are mentioned. In the examples, petroleum Diesel fuels containing sorbitan mono-oleate are described. The fuel compositions of Specification 701,459 are disclaimed.
