Abstract

A concentrated herbicidal composition comprises pentachlorophenol, a phenolic coal tar distillate, an alkali metal or aliphatic amine salt of an aliphatic or alicyclic carboxylic acid having from 10 to 30 carbon atoms in the molecule, preferably in sufficient amount to convert at least some of the pentachlorophenol to the salt form, and a minor proportion of water, the relative proportions of these materials being such that the composition is a stable liquid and can be readily diluted with water to give a satisfactory dispersion for direct use as a herbicide. The alkali metal or aliphatic amine salt may be sodium, potassium, or triethanolamine salt, of oleic acid or sodium, potassium, dimethylamine or triethanolamine salt of the acids present in tall oil. Specified coal tar distillates are a tar acid creosote containing 25 per cent or more by weight of phenols and distilling at from 215 to 350 DEG C. and a high boiling tar acid containing at least 95 per cent by weight of phenols and distilling at from 230 to 265 DEG C. Herbicidal chlorophenoxy acetic acid or its derivatives may also be incorporated.
