Abstract
A herbicidal composition comprises an aliphatic ester of a chloroaryloxy alkyl carboxylic acid and either an aliphatic amine or a salt of an aliphatic amine with a chloroaryloxy carboxylic acid, the amine or amine salt being such that the composition gives a clear solution or stable dispersion on dilution with water. The ester may be derived from 4 - chlorophenoxy -, 2: 4 - dichlorophenoxy -, 2 - methyl - 4 chlorophenoxy -, 2:4:5 - trichlorophenoxy and 2:4 - dichloro - 5 - methylphenoxy - acetic acids and monohydric aliphatic alcohols such as methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and the monoethyl and mono - n - butyl ethers of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol and dipropylene glycol. The preferred amines are those having 1 - 6 carbon atoms in the molecule such as dimethylamine, trimethylamine, isopropylamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine, used alone or in mixture. Cyclohexylamine may also be used. If desired free chloroaryloxycarboxylic acid in excess of that required to produce the amine salt may be present in the composition as disclosed in Specification 739,198. Mineral oil and organic solvents may also be present. In an example ethyl 2:4 - dichlorophenoxyacetate is mixed with triethanolamine to give a mixture which gives a stable dispersion on dilution with water.
