Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0991537/C2/1> wherein A is -OX or -NR2, X being ammonium, alkyl or aralkyl (all of which may be substituted) and R being H or optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl; alternatively, -NR2 may represent a heterocyclic radical. In examples, the parent acid (A = OH) is prepared by reduction of the corresponding trichloronitrobenzoic acid. The esters are prepared by esterifying the nitro acid, followed by reduction, the amides by nitrating amides of 2,4,5-trichlorobenzoic acid followed by reduction.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise 3-amino-2,4,5-trichlorobenzoic acid or metal or ammonium salts, esters or amides thereof, in admixture with a solid diluent or carrier or in admixture with water containing an emulsifying agent and/or an auxiliary solvent or in admixture with an organic solvent and an emulsifying agent capable of producing a stable emulsion when diluted with water. The invention comprises also a method of preventing undesired plant growth by use of one of the said compounds alone or in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier.
