Abstract

Triol monoethers are prepared by contacting in the presence of an aromatic sulphonic acid, an aliphatic or alicyclic monohydric alcohol which contains not less than 6 carbon atoms, with an epoxy-hydroxy-substituted alkane which contains a vic-epoxy group at least one carbon atom of which is directly attached to a hydroxy substituted alkyl radical, such as 2,3-epoxybutan-1-ol, 1,2-epoxy-2-methylbutan-4-ol, 1,2epoxy - 3 - methylbutan - 4 - ol and preferably glycidol. The aliphatic monohydric alcohol may be saturated, e.g. hexan-1-ol, heptan-1-ol, and octan-1-ol, octadecan-1-ol, or unsaturated e.g. oleyl alcohol, undec-10-en-1-ol. The aromatic sulphonic acid is preferably present in an amount not greater than 5% by weight of the epoxy-hydroxy-substituted alkane, and the latter is suitably contacted with greater than the stoichiometric quantity of the aliphatic or alicyclic monohydric alcohol. Suitable reaction temperatures are between 50 DEG and 150 DEG . The examples describe the preparation of the 1-(2,3-dihydroxy propoxyl) derivatives of hexane, heptane, octane, octadec-9-ene, and octadecane, and that of 3-cyclohexyloxy-1,2-dihydroxypropane.
