Abstract

Shampoos comprise, in combination with a carrier, a compound of formula <FORM:1066267/C4-C5/1> wherein R is a high molecular weight organic residue having an esterifying hydroxy group and derived from or contained in wool fat, M is a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable cation, and R1 has the meaning of R or M or represents an aliphatic esterifying alcohol or a salt-forming alkanolamine. A specified composition also contains coconut oil alcohol sodium diglycol ether sulphate and stearic acid.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula ROOC-CH(SO3M)-CH2COOR1 wherein R is a high molecular weight organic residue having an esterifying hydroxyl group and derived from or contained in wool fat, M is a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable cation, and R1 has the meaning of R or M or represents an aliphatic esterifying alcohol or salt-forming alkanolamine, and their preparation by reaction of an alcohol ROH, or combination of alcohols ROH and R1OH, with maleic anhydride to form a mono- or di-ester and reacting these with, respectively, a sulphite M2SO3 or a bisulphite MHSO3.ALSO:Pharmaceutical and/or cosmetic compositions comprise, in combination with a carrier, a compound of formula ROOC-CH(SO3M)-CH2COOR1, wherein R is a high molecular weight organic residue having an esterifying hydroxyl group and derived from or contained in wool fat, M is a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable cation, and R1 has the meaning of R or M or represents an aliphatic esterifying alcohol or salt-forming alkanolamine. The compositions may be creams, lotions or colloidal solutions, and pharmaceutical additives specified are boric acid, zinc oxide, sulphur, sulphonamides and penicillin.
