Abstract
An aqueous shampoo composition comprises 10-30% by weight lime-resistant anionic organic synthetic detergent and 0.2-5% by weight at least one phosphono compound, of formula either RN(CH2PO3M2)2 or <FORM:1068957/C4-C5/1> where R is C6-C18 alkyl, X is H or CH3, Z is OH, COOM or PO3M2 and M is H, Na, K, NH4 or C1-C3 alkyl- or hydroxy alkyl-substituted NH4, the composition having a pH of 6.0 to 10.0; "lime-resistant" detergents means detergents of which the calcium salts, being relatively soluble, do not tend to form a deposit in hard water and includes sodium or potassium alkyl (e.g. C12) sulphates, sodium or potassium alkyl benzene sulphonates, e.g. C9-C15 alkyl as described in Specification 645,129, sodium or ammonium alkyl (e.g. C12) glycerylether sulphonates, sodium coconut oil fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates, sodium or ammonium salts of sulphuric acid esters of the reaction product of 1 mole of e.g. tallow or coconut oil alcohol and 3 moles ethylene oxide and those set forth in Specifications 614,044 and 596,560 as well as C10-C18 acyl sarcosinates. Preferred phosphono compounds are the Na, K, NH4 or low molecular weight substituted NH4 salts of RN(CH2PO3M2)2 with R being C9-C14, particularly 1-hydroxy-1-methyl dodecyl phosphonic acid or dodecylidene diphosphonic acid. To increase the composition pH to at least 6.0 NaOH, KOH, mono-, di-, or triethanolamine may be added. As suds promoter up to 5% coconut mono- and/or di-ethanolamide may be present. Organic solvents e.g. ethanol, propylene glycol may be added. For paste and liquid consistencies the water content is adjusted to 45-55% and 60% at least, respectively, usually less than 90%. Exemplified compositions also contain methyl cellulose, ammonium sulphite and sodium E.D.T.A.
