Abstract

579,870. Lubricants; non-drying coating compositions. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. April 3, 1944, Nos. 6200 and 6201. Convention dates, Feb. 16, 1943. [Classes 91 and 95] Rust-preventive lubricating oil and grease compositons have incorporated therein a small proportion of an oil-soluble alkali metal soap of a soap-forming fatty acid or dehydrated sulphated castor oil or its alkali or alkaline earth metal salts together with a second additive comprising a normally liquid oil-soluble free fatty acid also in relatively small proportion. The fatty acid is preferably one containing at least 10 carbon atoms and the specified acids comprise oleic, ricinoleic, undecylenic, linoleic and fish oil fatty acids. The alkali metal soaps specified comprise sodium and potassium soaps of oleic, undecylenic elaidic, iso-oleic, ricinoleic, erucic, brassidic, lauric myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachidic, and behenic acids. The dehydrated sulphated castor oil may be obtained by heating the commercial product at a little above the boiling point of water to reduce the free water content to 0.5 per cent, or lower ; the salts which may be used include the ammonium salt. In addition to the soaps the compositions may conta:n alkali sulphonates, such as petroleum sulphonates. When the castor oil compound is used, the fatty acid solubilizer may be enhanced by the addition of a second solubilizer comprising a neutral polar solvent such as the C, to C, monohydric alcohols, particularly n-amyl alcohol, esters, ethers and ketones such as butyl, amyl and hexyl carbitols, diacetone alcohol, cyclohexanone, ethyl, butyl, propyl, and amyl acetates, diisopropyl and diethyl ether, dioxane, butyl and amyl cellosolve, and acetal; also pyridine. Other usual additives may be present; petroleum resin is specified. Steam cylinder lubricating oils are exemplified and the greases specified include Mg, Ca, Ba, Al, Na, and Li soap greases. Besides the usual uses of the compositions including cutting oils, they may be applied to stationary metal parts particularly when of iron.
