Abstract
A method of lubricating relatively moving parts comprises using as lubricant either a substantially neutral ester corresponding to the general formula <FORM:0821941/III/1> where x is an integer from 2 to 8, R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals, n is an integer including O and the radical of the acetylenic alcohol from which the ester is derived contains from 3 to 10 carbon atoms in its longest carbon chain which chain includes the terminal ethinyl group and is linked to the hydroxyl group of the alcohol, or a mixture comprising the substantially neutral ester and a saturated ester having lubricating properties, examples of which include di-octyl azelate, di-isoamyl adipate, di-2 - ethylhexyl glutanate and di - 2 - ethylhexyl phthalate. The expression "substantially neutral ester" denotes the pure diester or the diester containing a very small amount of the mono-ester. The acetylenic di-esters are preferably those in which x is an integer from 4-8, n is 0, 1 or 2 and the alcohol radical, preferably tertiary, contains 3-5 carbon atoms in its longest chain. The esters are high pressure lubricants and in the lubricant mixtures are preferably used in amounts ranging from 5-50% by weight of the whole. Numerous acetylenic esters are named and their preparation is given (see Group IV (b)).ALSO:Esters having the general formula <FORM:0821941/IV (a)/1> wherein x is an integer from 2 to 8, R1 and R2 are hydrogen or alkyl radicals, n is an integer including O and the radical of the acetylenic alcohol from which the ester is derived contains from 3 to 10 carbon atoms in its longest chain which chain includes the terminal ethinyl group and is linked to the hydroxyl group, are prepared by reacting an appropriate acetylenic alcohol, preferably a tertiary alcohol, with the dichloride of the appropriate dibasic acid in the presence of an acid acceptor, e.g. pyridine, and an inert organic liquid medium. The esters, examples of which are given, may be used in lubricating (see Group III).
