Abstract

Esters are prepared by reacting hydroabietyl alcohol, with or without a monohydric aliphatic alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms, with a hydroxy aliphatic polycarboxylic acid. Esters referred to are dihydroabietyl malate and tartrate, trihydroabietyl citrate, hydroabietyl-2-ethylhexyl malate, hydroabietyl-2-ethyl hexyl tartrate, di-hydroabietyl-2-ethyl hexyl citrate, hydroabietyl-di-2-ethylhexyl citrate, hydroabietyl-oleyl malate, hydroabietyl-oleyl tartrate, dihydroabietyl-oleyl citrate and hydroabietyl dioleyl citrate. The hydroabietyl alcohol is composed of dehydro-, dihydro- and tetrahydro-abietyl alcohols. Mixed esters containing 75 mole. per cent hydroabietyl and 25 mole. per cent oleyl ester may be made (1) by reacting hydroabietyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol and an a -hydroxy aliphatic carboxylic acid; (2) by heating a dihydroabietyl ester with a dioleyl ester; (3) by heating equal parts of an 85 mole. per cent hydroabietyl-15 mole. per cent oleyl ester and of a 65 mole. per cent hydroabietyl-35 mole. per cent oleyl ester; or (4) by reacting a hydroabietyl ester and an ester of an alcohol having 8-20 carbon atoms. In an example, di-hydroabietyl malate is prepared by heating a mixture of hydroabietyl alcohol and de-malic acid to 130-135 DEG C., adding benzene and refluxing the mixture; the benzene is then removed by reducing the pressure in the reactor and the product warmed to 130 DEG C. and then filtered to remove solids. Specification 694,101, [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:A composition comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an ester of a hydroxy aliphatic polycarboxylic acid in which about 50-100 mole per cent of the esterifying radicals are residues of hydroabietyl alcohol and any balance is a residue of at least one monohydric aliphatic alcohol having at least 8 carbon atoms. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil or a sulphurized and/or chlorinated oil. The hydroabietyl alcohol is composed of dehydro-, dihydro- and tetrahydroabietyl alcohols and also contains esters and hydrocarbons. Particular esters mentioned are dihydrobietyl malate and tartrate, trihydroabietyl citrate, hydroabietyl-2-ethylhexyl malate, hydroabietyl-2-ethylhexyl tartrate, di-hydroabietyl-2-ethylhexyl citrate, hydroabietyl-di-2-ethylhexyl citrate, hydroabietyl-oleyl malate, hydroabietyl-oleyl tartrate, dihydroabietyl-oleyl citrate and hydroabietyl dioleyl citrate. Optional ingredients include antioxidants such as phenyl-a -naphthylamine and ditertiary butyl p-cresol, and stain inhibitors such as alkyl substituted oxazolines.
