Abstract

Compositions for preventing corrosion of metals by moisture consist of a finely divided alkali metal benzoate dispersed in a water-insoluble medium comprising an ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a carboxylic acid containing a chain of at least ten carbon atoms. The ester may be a pure ester of an alcohol such as glycerol, ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol, or it may be a naturally-occurring oil or fat. Suitable oils are arachis oil, olive oil, neatsfoot oil, soya bean oil, castor oil, cotton-seed oil, linseed oil and fish-liver oils. The benzoate is preferably sodium benzoate. The concentration of benzoate in the mixture as applied is from 2 per cent to 10 per cent but concentrates containing up to 60 per cent can be prepared and later diluted with mineral oil or grease. The concentration of ester can be from 40 to 120 per cent of the concentration of the benzoate. Other components such as sodium nitrite and lanolin or wool fat may be included.
