Abstract

A quenching oil comprises a lubricating oil having a flash point above 350 DEG F. and a Redwood I viscosity at 140 DEG F. of not more than 100 seconds and containing dissolved therein not more than 10% by weight (of the quenching oil) of an oil-soluble aluminium compound, the viscosity of the quenching oil being not greater than 100 seconds Redwood I at 140 DEG F. Aluminium compounds specified are aluminium glycolate and a polyoxo-aluminium acylate, preferably one in which the acylate group is derived from benzoic or salicylic acid or an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 12 to 20 C atoms, e.g. stearic or oleic acid. Methods of preparing polyoxo-aluminium acylates are described in Specifications 806,113 and 825,878. The lubricating oil is preferably a refined mineral lubricating oil. An anti-gelling agent, e.g. 8-hydroxyquinoline, may be incorporated in the quenching oil.
