Abstract

An alcohol is produced from a lower alkyl ester of a higher aliphatic carboxylic acid, the alcohol having the same number of carbon atoms as the carboxylic acid, by a process comprising contacting the ester in the presence of at least 1 per cent, based upon the weight of the ester, of a copper-chromium oxide catalyst, at a pressure of 2000 to 4000 pounds per square inch at 550 DEG to 625 DEG F., with hydrogen containing 0.3 to 1.4 molar per cent of carbon monoxide, the molar ratio of hydrogen to the ester being in the range from 15 : 1 to 40 : 1. The "lower alkyl esters" contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the alcohol residue of the ester and the "higher aliphatic carboxylic acids" contain from 6 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule. Suitable esters for use as starting materials are, for example, the methyl, ethyl, isopropyl and butyl esters of fatty acids derived from coconut oil, tallow, sperm oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, soybean oil, and cottonseed oil. In the examples: (a) the methyl esters of the mixture of fatty acids derived from coconut oil is continuously hydrogenated with hydrogen gas containing initially 1.1 molar per cent of carbon monoxide (subsequently dropping to 0.3 per cent), to give fatty alcohols having the same numbers of carbon atoms as the fatty acids; (b) the methyl esters of the mixture of fatty acids derived from tallow is continuously hydrogenated with hydrogen gas initially containing 1.1 molar per cent of carbon monoxide (subsequently dropping to 0.6 per cent) to give the corresponding alcohols; and (c) a mixture of the methyl esters of the fatty acids derived from coconut oil and from tallow is continuously hydrogenated with hydrogen gas initially containing 1.1 molar per cent of carbon monoxide (subsequently dropping to 0.3 per cent) to give the corresponding alcohols.
