Abstract

Esters of pyridine carboxylic acids are prepared by reacting a pyridine carboxylic acid with an aliphatic alcohol containing at least four carbon atoms under reflux in the presence of an inert, water-immiscible organic solvent capable of forming a constant-boiling azeotrope with water and a C1-3 alkyl sulphonic acid catalyst, said catalyst being present in an amount of up to 20% by weight of the pyridine carboxylic acid, while continuously removing the water formed in the reaction by azeotropic distillation, continuing the reaction until substantially no free pyridine carboxylic acid remains, distilling the inert, water-immiscible organic solvent and unreacted aliphatic alcohol from the reaction mixture, and recovering the pyridine carboxylic acid ester from the residue.
