Abstract

A process for the production of bis-(betahydroxyalkyl) esters of terephthalic or isophthalic acid comprises reacting an alkylene oxide with terephthalic or isophthalic acid respectively in a reaction medium comprising one or more alcohols in the presence of a terephthalic acid salt or an isophthalic acid salt respectively soluble in the medium. The reaction medium preferably contains at least 30% by weight of alcohol, e.g. ethanols, propanols, butanols or pentanols, a 1 : 1 by volume mixture of 2butanol and methyl isobutyl ketone is particularly suitable. The reaction mixture should preferably be anhydrous. In examples bis-(b -hydroxy-ethyl) terephthalate is prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene oxide in the presence of the triethylamine salt using as solvent (1) ethanol (2) isopropanol (3) 2-butanol (4) 2-butanol and methyl isobutyl ketone.
