Abstract

Higher boron alkyls are obtained from lower boron alkyls by reacting a boron alkyl with ethylene in the presence of an aluminium trialkyl or aluminium dialkyl hydride, or aluminuium hydride. The reaction is preferably effected at temperatures between 90 DEG and 250 DEG C. at superatmospheric pressures, for example, exceeding 20 atm. The boron alkyls produced are not homogeneous compounds but statistical mixtures. It is preferred to use 1 to 10% mol of aluminium trialkyl. The reaction products can be freed from catalyst by treatment with cold water, which may be acidified, with the exclusion of air. The boron alkyls may be converted into dialkylborinic acid esters by oxidation, e.g. with gases containing only a small quantity of oxygen. By stronger oxidation, e.g. with pure oxygen, they may be converted into monoalkylboronic acid esters. The dialkylborinic acids and monoalkylboronic acids may be obtained together with the corresponding fatty alcohols by saponification of the esters with water or a substance with alkaline reaction. Specification 812,787 is referred to.
