Abstract

Dimethylformamide is prepared continuously by the reaction of a dimethylamine solution in more than 0.5 mols of an aliphatic alcohol per mol of dimethylamine with carbon monoxide under pressure in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate as catalyst and wherein the synthesis mixture entering and the reaction mixture constantly emerging also contains the formic acid ester corresponding to the alcohol used as solvent. Methanol is preferred as the alcohol and is used in conjunction with methyl formate.
