Abstract
Alcoholysis of glycerides is effected by treating them in the anhydrous state with an excess of alcohol in the presence of a neutral esterification catalyst comprising a metal alkyl carbonate or metal alkyl sulphite which is separated from the products after reaction by cooling, the ester being recovered after removal of excess alcohol. Esters of good colour are obtained. The glyceride is preferably neutralized before alcoholysis. In an example dehydrated coconut oil is treated with excess n-butanol in the presence of sodium n-butyl carbonate or sulphite, the cooled products are decanted from catalyst, the butanol distilled off in vacuo, glycerol removed by decantation and butyl esters of coconut oil fatty acids recovered. The butyl carbonate or sulphite is made by passing CO2 or SO2 through butanol containing sodium.
