Abstract
An ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid is transesterified with an alcohol at elevated temperature in the presence, as a catalyst of an alkali metal salt of mercaptobenzthiazole, or phthalimide or lithium hydroxide. The reaction may be at the boiling point of the mixture and the alcohol displaced is distilled off. The catalyst may be added or formed in situ and a polymerization inhibitors may be present. Butanol, octanol, lauryl alcohol, ethoxyethanol, ethylene glycol, 1,3-propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, cyclohexanol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, and dimethyl aminoethanol are mentioned and examples describe the preparation of ethylene glycol di- and mono-methacrylate and butyl methacrylate.
