Abstract

Glycerine and fatty esters are separated from the products of the alcoholysis of fatty acid glycerides in the presence of alkaline compounds of alkali metals by adding ammonium chloride, distilling off the alcohol, separating the ester layer, removing the precipitated alkali metal chloride, and recovering the glycerine. Any soaps which may be formed during the alcoholysis process are converted by the ammonium chloride into alkali metal chloride, ammonia, and free fatty acid, and in the subsequent separation these acids form a separate layer containing the bulk of any colouring matter present so that the fatty esters and glycerine are obtained in a high degree of purity. Examples refer to the conversion of coconut oil, soyabean oil, peanut oil, linseed oil, castor oil and tallow into the methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, butyl, octyl and methallyl esters of the fatty acids present, and glycerine.
