Abstract

Polyvinyl acetate is heated with a polybasic acid which has an alpha-beta dicarboxylic acid group, not more than one hydroxy group and if unsaturated has a cis formation, till a partially thickened alkali soluble mass is formed. This is washed free from acid, alkali is added to adjust the pH to 7 and the concentrated solution is diluted and caustic alkali added to give an alkali metal salt of an acid ester of a partially esterified polyvinyl alcohol in which the vinyl alcohol groups are partly acetylated, partly unreplaced and partly esterified with the polybasic acid. Acids specified are succinic, citric, malic, maleic and phthalic. More than one acid may be used and an anhydride and water may replace the acid. Addition of these products stabilises aqueous emulsions containing nitrocellulose, dyes, blown linseed and castor oil, butyl alcohol, ethyl and butyl acetates, toluene and methyl cyclohexanone.
