Abstract

Products suitable for use in coating compositions and printing inks are obtained by interpolymerizing styrene or a nuclear alkyl or halogen substituted styrene with a partially polymerized ester produced by reacting two or more polyhydric alcohols with one or more polybasic organic acids and with an unsaturated drying oil fatty acid or a mixture of drying oil fatty acids at least one of which is unsaturated. If desired the ester may be made in two stages by forming the partial esters of the polyhydric alcohols and either the fatty or polybasic acid and completing the esterification with the second acid or acids. The drying oil fatty acid or mixture of acids may be obtained by saponification of a drying or semi-drying oil and the partial esters by alcoholysis of the oils with a polyhydric alcohol other than glycol. The interpolymerization may be carried out in aqueous emulsion or in solution, specified solvents are white spirit and xylene. The solvent may also comprise a terpene, preferably a mono-cyclic a -terpene or dipentene alone or in admixture with another solvent and if desired the terpene may be added during the reaction. A part of the styrene, e.g. 25 per cent, may be present initially and the remainder added continuously or intermittently during the reaction. Specified polyhydric alcohols are glycerol, pentaerythritol, mannitol and sorbitol. Polybasic acids listed are sebacic, maleic and phthalic acids or their anhydrides. Specified fatty acids are those of linseed and tung oils, licanic acid and acids prepared by dehydration of castor oil fatty acids and the blowing of linseed oil fatty acids. Where a mixture of drying oil fatty acids is employed it preferably comprises conjugated triene fatty acids with other unsaturated fatty acids.
