Abstract

Styrene and/or derivatives thereof, e.g. a -methyl styrene and nuclear alkyl or halogen substituted styrenes, are copolymerized with partial ester adducts of one or more drying and semi-drying oils, e.g. linseed, bleached linseed, chinawood, soyabean and oiticica oils, with maleic anhydride, the free anhydride groups of p which are esterified with one or more mono- or polyvalent alcohols, e.g. hydroabietyl alcohol, glycerol or pentaerythritol either entirely or partially simultaneously with the copolymerization. The preformed adduct, styrene and alcohol may be mixed at room temperature and reacted at elevated temperature; or the styrene may be added over a period to the adduct which may be preheated and the alcohol added half-an-hour after the start or immediately after the completion of the styrene addition; the alcohol may be added to the preheated adduct and styrene added to the mixture over a period; or mixed styrene and alcohol may be added to the adduct over a period. Examples describe conversion products of bleached linseed and soyabean oils with maleic anhydride reacted with styrene either alone or admixed with a -methyl styrene, and glycerol, hydroabietyl alcohol, or pentaerythritol in the presence of wood and oiticica oils. U.S.A. Specifications 2,343,483 and 2,320,724 are referred to.
