Abstract

A coating composition comprises a urea-formaldehyde resin, preferably one which has been etherified, e.g. with butyl or octyl alcohol, and an alkyd resin modified, by esterification, so as to contain the radicles of a drying oil fatty acid and of a hydroxylated or oxidized unsaturated fatty acid, the latter radicles constituting at least one third of the acid radicles present. The second-named radicles may be formed in situ, e.g. by blowing the drying-oil-fatty-acid-radicle-modified resin until at least one third (but not all) of the unsaturation has been removed. Specified drying oil fatty acid radicles are those derived from linseed, tung, perilla and dehydrated castor oils and specified hydroxylated or oxidized unsaturated fatty acid radicles are those derived from blown rapeseed oil, raw or blown castor oil, and blown linseed oil. In examples: (1) a partial condensate of phthalic anhydride, glycerine, and linseed oil fatty acids is further condensed with blown castor oil, dissolved in xylene, and mixed with a xylene solution of a butylated urea-formaldehyde resin; (2) a partial condensate similar to that of example 1 is blown with air, dissolved in xylene, and mixed with a xylene solution of an octylated urea-formaldehyde resin; (3) dehydrated castor oil and glycerine, after heating together, are condensed with citric acid and the condensate used as in example 1; (4) a partial condensate of castor oil and phthalic anhydride is further condensed with pentaerythritol, linseed oil fatty acids and more phthalic anhydride, blown with air, dissolved in xylene, and butanol and mixed with the urea-formaldehyde resin of example 2; (5) a partial condensate of castor oil and maleic anhydride is further condensed with phthalic anhydride, glycerine and linseed oil fatty acids, dissolved in xylene, and mixed with urea-formaldehyde resin as in Example 1.
