Abstract
A resin is prepared by mixing a polycarboxylic acid anhydride with a quantity of castor oil at least sufficient to provide by its decomposition enough water to convert the said anhydride to acid, heating under such increased pressure that dehydration of the acid is prevented, and condensing with a polyhydric alcohol, a partially esterified polyhydric alcohol containing at least one free hydroxyl group, or a mixture of these. In a modification a quantity of castor oil less than that stated above is used, and water is added to compensate for the deficiency. There may also be added in the first stage one or more oils, preferably drying oils, heat treated or not, e.g. linseed, chinawood, perilla, and soya bean oils; or, for example in the final stage, a natural acidic resin, e.g. colophony or run copal. The first condensation may be carried out, preferably in the presence of oil-splitting catalysts, e.g. cobalt naphthenate or sodium glycerate, at between 280 and 300 DEG C. at 70 to 135 lb. per sq. in. pressure; and the final condensation at between 220 and 280 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure. In examples: castor oil (1) with, (2) without the addition of linseed oil, is heated with phthalic anhydride and the product condensed with glycerol. The product dissolved, e.g. in white spirit or turpentine with the addition of driers may be used in varnish or enamel. Specifications 370,440 and 470,471 are referred to.
