Abstract
548,906. Modified alkyd resins. BRITISH RESIN PRODUCTS, Ltd., and WILSON, J. J. March 21, 1941, No. 3884. [Class 2 (iii)] A process for the preparation of a modified alkyd resin comprises the step of modifying a natural resin by heating it with a drying oil, or its fatty acid, in such a manner that the natural resin thus modified is, at room temperature, still a solid compound, prior to incorporating and condensing it, with the aid of heat, with a polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensation product, or the components thereof. When the natural resin is to be modified with a drying oil, these two materials should be heated together until some double decomposition (ester interchange) has taken place. The modified natural resin may be heated with the polycarboxylic acid prior to the addition of the polyhydric alcohol, or the two latter substances may be added simultaneously. Alternatively, the modified natural resin may be heated with a partly condensed polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid reaction mixture, and condensation then completed. Examples are given of the production of resins from : (1) gum resin, dehydrated castor oil, maleic anhydride and glycerol; (2) wood resin, tung oil, maleic anhydride and glycerol; (3) rosin, tung oil, maleic anhydride and di-ethylene glycol; (4) rosin, linseed oil, maleic anhydride and glycerol.
