Abstract

A drying oil is produced by heating castor oil with a monocarboxylic acid having double bonds in the 2 and 4 positions. Alternatively, the free fatty acid corresponding to castor oil, either alone or mixed with castor oil, may be heated with the monocarboxylic acid and the product esterified with a polyhydric alcohol such as glycerol. Monocarboxylic acids mentioned are sorbic, octatrien-2,4,6-oic, 4-methylheptadien-2, 4-oic, 5-cyclohexyl-pentadien-2,4-oic and 7-phenyl-heptatrien-2,4,6-oic acids, and it is believed that the monocarboxylic acid esterifies the tri-ricinolien of the castor oil. Drying oils thus produced from castor oil may form the whole or part of the oil-component in oil-modified synthetic resins, such as glyceryl phthalate alkyd resins and resins derived from formaldehyde and phenols, and may also be used in the production of varnishes from natural resins. The Specification includes details of the synthesis of the monocarboxylic acids listed above.
