Abstract
Synthetic resins are prepared by heating maleic anhydride, an unsaturated fatty acid derivable from natural fats and oils, glycerol and cyclohexanol or an alkyl cyclohexanol. Partial esters of the unsaturated fatty acid and glycerol may be used. Suitable unsaturated fatty acids include linoleic and the acids of soya - bean, cottonseed and castor oils. Natural resins such as colophony, esterified colophony or fused congo copal also may be used. The products may be blended with other phthalic acid resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins or with nitrocellulose. In examples, maleic acid, glycerine and cyclohexanol are condensed in the presence of (1) linseed oil fatty acids, (2) soya bean oil fatty acids, (3) linseed oil monoglyceride, or (4) linseed oil fatty acids and fused congo copal.
